چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) correlates with cardiovascular mortality in patients under hemodialysis. In this investigation, we evaluated relationship between CCA-IMT with dependent and independent cardiovascular risk factors in chronic hemodialysis patients. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 51 chronic hemodialysis patients, (31 males and 20 females) were enrolled. left and right CCA-IMT were measured using high resolution B-mode ultra sonography and maximum measure was considered. Based on ultra sonographic findings, patients were divided into two groups, one with carotid intima thickness of ≥0.8mm and another group with carotid intima thickness of <0.8mm. Data was analyzed, using Minitab software. Results: Mean age of these with carotid intima thickness ≥0.8mm was significantly higher than these with carotid intima thickness <0.80mm (P<0.05), (60.7±8.4 vs 41.3±18.7). Although, there were differences in hemodialysis duration, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, blood cholesterol and triglyceride LDL, diabetes and smoking history of these two groups, but the differences were not significant. Conclusion: This study indicates that there is no significant correlation between CCA-IMT and cardiovascular risk factors in chronic hemodialysis patients

Carotid intima-media thickness in maintenance hemodialysis patients: role of cardiovascular risk factor.

INTRODUCTION Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) has been introduced as a cardiovascular disease predictor which may increase in hamodialysis patients. As there are many risk factors in the uremic state that theoretically lead to increase in CIMT, this study was aimed to determine risk factors of CIMT increase in a group of hemodialysis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-two hemodialys...

Different risk factors for the maximum and the mean carotid intima-media thickness in hemodialysis patients.

OBJECTIVE High-resolution B-mode ultrasonography has been widely used for the noninvasive assessment of atherosclerosis in hemodialysis patients. But, there are two major methods of carotid ultrasonography: one including plaque and the other excluding plaque. METHODS The subjects were 112 hemodialysis patients (58 men and 54 women) with a mean age of 55.8 +/- 13.0 years. The maximum intima-me...

Carotid artery intima-media thickness and cognition in cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND Increased carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) is a non-invasive marker of systemic arterial disease. Increased IMT has been associated with atherosclerosis, abnormal arterial mechanics, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Given evidence of a relationship between cardiovascular health and attention-executive-psychomotor functioning, the purpose of this study was to examine IMT ...

Cardiovascular risk factors in childhood and carotid artery intima-media thickness in adulthood: the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study.

CONTEXT Exposure to cardiovascular risk factors during childhood and adolescence may be associated with the development of atherosclerosis later in life. OBJECTIVE To study the relationship between cardiovascular risk factors measured in childhood and adolescence and common carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT), a marker of preclinical atherosclerosis, measured in adulthood. DESIGN, S...

Differences in cardiovascular disease risk factors associated with maximum and mean carotid intima-media thickness among hemodialysis patients.

INTRODUCTION Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) could be used as a surrogate marker of atherosclerosis in hemodialysis patients. Since different mechanisms are involved in the atheroma formation and arterial wall thickness, we assessed the relationship between the maximum and the mean CIMT with different cardiovascular risk factors in dialysis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS The mean and t...

Carotid intima-media thickness and plaque in cardiovascular risk assessment.

Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) has been shown to predict cardiovascular (CV) risk in multiple large studies. Careful evaluation of CIMT studies reveals discrepancies in the comprehensiveness with which CIMT is assessed-the number of carotid segments evaluated (common carotid artery [CCA], internal carotid artery [ICA], or the carotid bulb), the type of measurements made (mean or maximum ...
